Roky Erickson’s apartment

Posted in american heroes, American music, lost souls, movies, playlist on July 31, 2009 by All Conference Vintage

One of the most chilling scenes in an endless stream of chilling scenes in “You’re Gonna Miss Me”, the 2005 documentary about psychedelia’s mad professor 13th Floor Elevators’ Roky Erickson, is when the viewer is given a guided tour of Roky’s apartment. This cachophonous interlude gets at the core of schizophrenia as Roky automatically goes through an obviously familiar routine of creating noise with every available appliance in his dingy apartment to drown out whatever voices torment him. Truly heartbreaking. Add that doc to your queue right now.

I still love Elvis

Posted in American music, arizona, chicago, i am endlessly fascinating, playlist on July 11, 2009 by All Conference Vintage

Elvis Presley kept me company via iPod as I sat for 13 hours in Midway Airport in Chicago trying to fly standby back to Phoenix and then the next day on my flight back the next day. It seems that I get on a heavy duty Elvis kick about once a year and can’t get enough, but then it sort of vanishes until I need the King again. The King of Rock and Roll boxset was a fine contrast to the wall-to-wall coverage of the Michael Jackson funeral on CNN that had everyone in the terminal near tears. There’s only one King for me and it ain’t the King of Pop. Well, two if you count King Diamond.

If you’re not a Who fan or a fan of good music in general, you might recognize this song from an awful Hummer commercial.

Friday Feelgood song of the week: "Making Time" by The Creation (1966)

Like everyone else in the world, I discovered this band via Rushmore. They have a lot of fucking essential songs. I really dig this live performance on German television in 1966. I’m not a guitar nerd, but playing with a violin bow on a double cutaway just blew my mind. I wondered how he did that!

Sometimes I get these feelings
and I don’t know what to say
Is it that I don’t belong here
Cause I really want to stay
Sometimes I wish that you
Could break up to me
Is this real?

In time I found myself
Wishing that you were here
But then I realized
That all time stood still
Sometimes I wish that you
Could break down to me
Is this real?
